Easy walk to the archaeological site on the top of Monte San Martino that dominates the Valley of Giudicarie (do not confuse this area with the one above the village of Campi)
Along the forest road from San Giovanni al Monte to Malga Vigo is the easiest way to reach the archaeological area of San Martino. The road is mainly flat.
The archaeological area of San Martino Lundo/Lomaso was an ancient medieval fortified village, covering a surface of 10.000 square metres (the fortified area was of 17.000 square metres). The area was protected by a 1,5 km long wall.
The view opens on the wide pastures of Malga Vigo and on the Brenta Dolomites.

There are 4 sites in the surroundings dedicated to San Martino, bishop of Tours and knight, protector of fortified areas (Campi, Lomaso, Bleggio Superiore and Stenico)
Safety Tips
This information is subject to inevitable variations, so none of these indications are absolute. From the little church continue straight on the asphalt road, then take the path on the left that reconnects with the road before Marcarie, where you keep going on the forestry road (signs SAT 425).
After a short ascent, you start going down or flat until the pastures of Malga Vigo. Go beyond the building of the dairy and after a few minutes, you find the fork to the archaeological area of San Martino. Turn to the left and go up until the ruins on the top.
The way back is along the same track.
Trentino public transport lines do not reach the starting point of the route.
From Arco, follow the signs for Padaro and then for San Giovanni al Monte.

In San Giovanni, park wherever possible between the small church on the roadside and the locality of Marcarie where you leave the asphalt road.
You need to wear the right clothing and take the proper gear when you go hiking in the mountains. Even on relatively short easy outings make sure to take all you need so you don't run into trouble if things take an unexpected turn, for example a storm blows up or you have a sudden drop in energy levels.
What should you take when you go on a hike?
Your rucksack (for a day trip a 25/30L capacity should do) should contain:
Make sure you're wearing the right footwear for the trail and season. The going can get rough and rocky underfoot and a pair of hiking boots will protect you from sprains. When wet, a grassy slope, rocky slab or steep trail can be dangerous unless you are wearing the proper footwear.
And finally... don't forget to bring your camera! You'll need it to capture the stunning views you come across all over Garda Trentino. And if you like, you can share your memories with us at #GardaTrentino.
